Moving Across Country With Pets – Tips and Tricks for Your Furry Friend

Planning a long-distance move across the country is a hurdle in itself. You’ve had a lot on your plate lately from house-hunting to organizing, to spending hours packing up for your move. Now that you’ve most of those things squared away, it’s time to focus on your pooch.

Moving across the country with pets isn’t easy. It’s essential to prepare and anticipate any glitches that can happen along the way.

It’s all a part of traveling with your furry friends. Sometimes, you don’t know what to expect. However, you can prepare to make the trip as easy on you and your furry friends as possible.

For information on how to do just that, continue reading below!

1. Make a Trip to the Vet

Before you pack your car and head out, be sure to make an appointment at the veterinarian’s office. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on his vaccinations. You should also inform your veterinarian office of your move so that they can do a full inspection of your pet’s health.

Your veterinarian will also provide you with proper documentation needed to cross state lines with your pet. Check with the state veterinarian in the capital city of your new home state for specific state laws concerning entry of your pet.

2. Travel Safely

Make sure your animal is secure within the vehicle. Dogs and cats should be in proper carriers or crates. If you have a large dog and his crate won’t fit in your car, use a car harness to keep him securely strapped in the back of the car.

3. Plan for Lots of Potty Breaks

Always plan for lots of potty breaks when traveling by car. It’s essential to plan for these breaks by adding them to your schedule. This is a great way to stay calm and stress-free while on your trip.

If you plan for several potty breaks ahead of time, then you won’t have to worry about falling behind schedule.

4. Come Prepared with Supplies

When packing your vehicle, come prepared with all of the appropriate supplies in addition to his leash.

If your pet is on a special diet, be sure to have an adequate supply of their food with you. You can place individual servings in plastic bags to keep things easy for you.

Make sure your pet has plenty of water en route. Pack some disposal bags to clean up messes as well.

Also, be sure to have a pet first aid kit with you and anything else that your pet needs daily.

5. Schedule Pet-Friendly Stops

When traveling across the country, it’s guaranteed that you’ll stop along the way. Be sure to schedule pet-friendly stops on your trip ahead of time. Look for hotels, parks, and other places on your route that are pet-friendly.

Be certain your dog gets plenty of chances to stretch his legs and exercise on the long car ride.

6. Update Their Information

Take care to update your pet’s identification tags and microchip information with your new address and phone number right away upon arrival in your new town.
